Knowledge Bases

The knowledge base of an expert system represents facts and rules. Scientists trained in hypothesis testing tend to think in terms of a simple 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning (e.g., if X then A else B). As any computer programmer would attest, 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning in conjunction with the use of 'AND-OR' provides considerable flexibility in solving problems (e.g., if X and Y then A else if X or Y then B else C). Simple plant pests models use simple 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning, multivariate plant pests models use 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning in conjunction with the use of 'AND', and computer simulation plant pest models use 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning in conjunction with the use of 'AND-OR'. An expert system goes beyond 'IF-THEN-ELSE' reasoning. It is not restricted to forward only flow-chart like stepwise decision making and does not use traditional procedural programming practices. A knowledge base is built from a large compilation of 'IF-THEN-ELSE' statements and is reasoned upon by the inference engine. Design information about future knowledge bases will be presented here.

Coming soon. Knowledge base details.
